(Reuters] – New York City is ending its quarantine policy for entire classes exposed to coronavirus. It will now prioritize a stepped-up testing program in order that students with symptoms who have tested negative for COVID-19 may remain in school. This was announced by officials on Tuesday.

Health officials now place more emphasis on testing, and try to minimize isolation. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had reduced the time for Americans suffering from COVID-19 symptoms to just five days, compared with the 10 day previous guidance.

Joe Biden, President of the United States has promised to reduce the shortage in COVID-19 testing. The Omicron variant is expected to overtake hospitals and disrupt travel plans this week as it spreads throughout the country.

New York’s “Stay Secure, Stay Open” policy has been described by Bill de Blasio and goes into effect Jan. 3. New York City’s public schools will see approximately one million students return from vacation on Monday.

At a press conference, Eric Adams (New York City Mayor) and Kathy Hochul (New York Governor) made these announcements. New York City plans to detect more infections and mitigate disruptions. Officials described remote learning in New York City as “a failure experiment”.

New York City used to have a policy of quarantine for 10 days unvaccinated students and close friends.

The students will undergo rapid home tests instead of being sent to school with unvaccinated students. They can be retested if they become symptomatic or test negative the next day.

According to the announcement, students will be administered a second test at home within seven days after their exposure.

This step caused concern among parents. A tweeter suggested that schools be kept away for at least one week after possible travel exposure or holiday gatherings.

Other advocates called for compulsory testing of all students and school staff.

New York has also decided to limit how many people can be allowed in Times Square during its New Year’s Eve festivities. This is in response the a sudden increase in Omicron-related coronavirus infections.

Separately Biden on Tuesday reversed an earlier proclamation that had imposed travel restrictions for eight countries in southern Africa following the Omicron variant’s emergence.
