REUTERS/Brenda(Reuters) – Rivian Automotive Inc has announced that it will postpone deliveries of its electric pickup truck, and sport utility vehicle equipped with large battery packs until 2023. Chief Executive RJ Scaringe made the announcement in a letter to customers.
Scaringe claimed that most of Rivian’s 71,000 preorders for R1T pickup trucks and R1S SUVs in Canada and the United States were for vehicles equipped with small batteries, giving 314 mile range per charge.
Scaringe wrote in an email posted by Rivian to Reddit that “In order for us to serve the greatest number of preorder holders”, Scaringe explained.
Rivian’s shares were down 3.9% to $102.87
Scaringe, who was reporting its first quarter results earlier in the month as an electric vehicle manufacturer, had highlighted production problems citing global supply chain constraints, COVID-19 pandemic and a tight labor marketplace. Short-term concerns around the building of electric battery modules were also mentioned.
Rivian delivered 386 out of 652 cars it built, which includes its SUV and pickup.
Max Pack, the larger battery pack is predicted to deliver 400 miles per single charge. The Max pack received 20% of preorders.
Rivian announced that it would introduce an option for Rivian customers in the early 2022 that displays their delivery times.
