(Reuters). Apple has placed Foxconn, its iPhone assembler in South India on probation. Both companies discovered some of the remote rooms and meals that employees were using did not comply with required standards.
Apple (NASDAQ: ) was vague about what it meant to be on probation. The company placed Wistron Corporation’s plant in southern India on probation last year after there was unrest. They said they would not give the Taiwanese business new business until they addressed how workers were treated.
Following protests earlier in the month, more than 250 people who live near Chennai in the Foxconn town in Sriperumbudur were suffering from food poisoning.
It employed approximately 17,000 people when it was closed down on December 18. Apple and Foxconn didn’t say when they expected it to reopen.
Foxconn spokeswoman said that Foxconn was currently restructuring its local management, and that they were taking immediate actions to improve the facilities. She also added that Foxconn would continue paying all employees while making necessary improvements in order to restart operations.
Reuters reports that 150 people were treated for food poisoning at the factory.
Apple spokeswoman said Wednesday that independent auditors were sent to the dormitories in response to recent concerns regarding food safety at Foxconn Sriperumbudur and conditions for accommodation.
Apple stated that it found some remote accommodation and dining areas that were being used by employees didn’t meet Apple’s requirements. It said that the supplier was in discussions with Apple to develop a complete set of corrective measures and will make sure that the facility is reopened according to its exact standards.
Reuters earlier reported that Foxconn, along with 11 other contractors who supply food and living spaces, was summoned by the state government to meet with them. Foxconn officials asked Foxconn for a review of services that were provided to the workers.
Analysts believe that Apple’s impact from closing the factory, which produces iPhone 12 models, will be negligible. However, the company has begun trial production of iPhone 13 and is currently producing iPhone 12. The facility is strategically important as Apple attempts to lessen its dependence on China’s supply network amid the trade tensions between Washington, Beijing.
