(Reuters) – Carnival Corp (NYSE:) Corp’s Cunard unit announced Wednesday that the Queen Mary 2 cruise ship will skip New York City and extend its stay to Barbados from Jan. 2 through January 2 in order to hire more people.

While the company claimed that its precautionary decision to hire more crew was made, it did not elaborate why more staff were needed onboard.

Queen Mary 2 is one of the 85 vessels the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating for COVID-19 onboard cases.

There are fears that U.S. officials could reintroduce an interim ban on cruising following the spread of Omicron, months after U.S. operators resumed guests operations.

Queen Mary 2, a 28-night Queen Mary 2 vessel, left Southampton on December 13th and will sail to the United Kingdom to return home after its stop in Barbados. It is expected to arrive at the British port of London on Jan. 10, just as it was planned.

Carnival stated Tuesday that the itineraries for most of its ships remained unchanged, but that a handful of destination ports had to review their processes and protocols in light of this fast-growing new version.

Carnival U.S. shares dropped nearly 1% on Wednesday before the bell.
