El Salvadorians Tweet a Combined Loss Of $90,000.000 In Bitcoin From Their Government Chivo Wallets

Many El Salvadorans have complained about mysterious losses of Chivo funds over the last few weeks via Twitter (NYSE. In September, El Salvador’s government accepted as legal tender, and it awarded fractional amounts of Bitcoin – approximately worth $30 – to all citizens who signed up for the government’s preferred digital wallet Chivo.

Mid-December saw @_elcomisionado create a thread with dozens of examples from tweets by people who claimed losses to their Chivo wallets. These range from $61 up to $16,000. Zaira Navas (an attorney, victim) reported that another 131 identity theft complaints were filed in the past week.

“We represent a group of people who reported to our digital platform, but there are many other people who went to the Prosecutor’s Office on their own or to the company’s headquarters to complain,” Navas said after bringing the cases to the Attorney General’s office, La Prensa Grafica reported.

El Salvador was the first to recognize Bitcoin as legal tender. Nayib Bikuele, President of Bitcoin City Foundation plans to invest $1 billion in Bitcoin bonds to fund his plan to establish a Bitcoin city. Since June, Nayib Bukele has advocated for Bitcoin adoption. Recently, the government announced it owns 1,391 Bitcoin. However, neither the El Salvadoran government or Chivo wallet has yet to respond regarding the lawsuit pending and purported Bitcoin losses.
