REUTERS/Fred Prouser(Reuters) – JetBlue Airways Corporation (NASDAQ:) Corp will reduce its schedule to Jan. 13, by roughly 1,280 flights, due to a rise in Omicron coronavirus strain related sicknesses. A spokesperson for JetBlue Airways told Reuters that the airline informed Reuters Thursday.
Since Christmas Eve, hundreds of American airlines have cancelled flights as they struggle with staff shortages and weather conditions in some parts of the United States.
“We expect the number of COVID cases in the northeast – where most of our crewmembers are based – to continue to surge for the next week or two,” JetBlue’s spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “This indicates that additional cancellations are possible until cases start to drop.”
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has risen to new heights in America in recent days. A Reuters tally revealed that the average daily case count reached 258,312 in just seven days.
The Wall Street Journal reported JetBlue’s late Wednesday move.
This week, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that it is not considering a mandate for vaccines for domestic flights. Later, it reduced the time that Americans should be isolated from COVID-19-asymptomatic patients to five days. It had previously recommended a 10-day period.
