NEW YORK (Reuters), a U.S. prosecution has decided to drop the case against Manhattan’s two jail guards, who were accused of falsifying records during the time Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide.
In a Thursday filing in Manhattan federal court, prosecutors asked a judge to dismiss claims against Tova Noel and Michael Thomas, after both complied with the six-month deferred prosecution agreements they agreed to https://www.reuters.com/world/us/jeffrey-epsteins-jail-guards-avoid-prison-agreement-with-prosecutors-2021-05-22 in May.
Epstein was hanged in his Metropolitan Correctional Center cell, Aug. 10, 2019, as he waited to be tried for sex-trafficking. New York City’s Medical Examiner called it a suicide.
Thomas and Noel are accused of being more interested in surfing the net than Epstein, and instead of checking Epstein’s status every 30 minutes.
Both men admitted they “willfully” and “knowingly” falsified records so that it appeared they were properly monitoring Epstein.
Deferred prosecution agreements stipulated that each must perform 100 hours community service and assist in federal investigations resulting from Epstein’s death.
William Barr was the U.S. Attorney General at that time. He had become angry about the fact that such an inmate, with high profile, could kill himself in federal custody.
Epstein, who had just died from suicide attempt in the month prior to his death, was also on suicide watch.
Montell Figgins, Thomas’ attorney, stated that his client was pleased with the decision and looks forward to moving on. Noel’s lawyers didn’t immediately respond to our requests for comment.
Epstein’s longtime associate, British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, was convicted https://www.reuters.com/world/us/maxwell-jury-resume-deliberations-after-judge-warns-omicron-risk-2021-12-29 on Wednesday of helping recruit and groom underage girls for Epstein to abuse over at least a decade.
Maxwell could appeal her conviction.
