CAPE TOWN (Reuters – On Sunday there was a fire at South African Parliament in Cape Town. The media reported that flames were coming from the roof, and that smoke could be seen some distance away.
However, it was not immediately obvious if there were any people in the area.
Jean Pierre Smith of Cape Town’s mayoral committee, responsible for security and safety, stated that the fire broke out on the third floor.
Smith stated that the roof had been set ablaze and the National Assembly Building was also on fire.
Television images showed the emergency services on scene. Smith stated that the emergency services included about 36 firefighters and six firefighting apparatus.
