AMSTERDAM (Reuters] – A crowd of thousands gathered at the Dutch capital to protest COVID-19 lockdown and vaccinations on Sunday.
Femke Halsema was the Amsterdam mayor. He issued an emergency ordinance empowering police officers to clear Museum Square. The order came after protesters had violated the ban on public gatherings following the recent wave of coronavirus infection.
They wore mostly non-masks, broke social distancing laws, and marched along main streets, singing and waving yellow umbrellas as protest against the government’s measures.
The Netherlands was put into an abrupt lockdown by the government on December 19, when it closed all essential shops, restaurants, hairdressers and gyms. It also ordered the closing of public spaces such as museums, galleries, hospitals, schools, etc., until Jan. 14.
The current restrictions prohibit public gatherings greater than two persons.
As with other European countries the Netherlands took these steps to avoid a second wave of Omicron virus that could overburden an already stretched healthcare system.
