(Reuters) – Monday’s expansion of the Trump-era US border program, which requires asylum seekers to remain in Mexico while they wait for U.S. immigration hearings in America, was done by San Diego officials, according to Biden administration officials.

Democratic President Joe Biden sought to repeal the Republican policies of his predecessor, often called ‘Remain In Mexico’, shortly after becoming president last January.

A federal judge ordered it to be restored after Texas and Missouri sued. Officials said Monday that 36 migrants had been brought to El Paso’s immigration court to be heard under the program.

The administration last week asked https://www.reuters.com/world/us/biden-asks-us-supreme-court-hear-remain-mexico-case-2021-12-29 the U.S. Supreme Court whether it needed to continue to implement the policy, officially called the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP). Former President Donald Trump had this policy. Migrants who cross the border from Mexico in search of asylum will have to wait in Mexico while their cases are heard, rather than waiting in America for them to decide.

Alejandro Mayorkas (Homeland Security Secretary) stated that Trump’s programme had “endemic flaws”, and “unjustifiable humans costs” in October.

UNHCR is the U.N. refugee agency and has called to end this program. UNHCR claims that it exposes asylum seekers to risk and damages their rights under due process.
