TAIPEI, (Reuters) – Tsai Ingwen, Taiwanese President, urged vigilance to stop the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant after it was discovered in Taiwan.

Because of its early, effective and comprehensive prevention efforts, Taiwan managed to keep the pandemic under control. This includes closing many of its borders. Although most cases were imported, the majority of the cases occurred in Taiwan. However, there was an increase in domestic cases around the middle 2021.

Taiwan reported this week its first Omicron variant cases after months of relative safety. Both were linked to quarantine hotels.

The Omicron variant was found in another person working as a cleaner at the main international airport on the island, said Chen Shihchung, Health Minister.

Tsai stated that domestic cases are now emerging and advised everyone to be vigilant. He also added that the airport had tightened its epidemic prevention procedures.

Most importantly, get your vaccinations as quickly as you can.

Chen, Health Minister, said that the increased number of cases has put pressure on government efforts to combat the pandemic.

Many coronavirus testing facilities were established in Taoyuan (the city that houses the airport), while the rule of wearing masks was restored.

Taiwan has vacinated approximately 70% of its 23.5million inhabitants. The government offers incentives, such as coupons for shopping to help boost this rate.
