(Reuters) – U.S. officials have detained a Colombian citizen for his alleged involvement with the assassination attempt on Haitian President Jovenel Moise. A U.S. law enforcement official confirmed to Reuters that the man will appear in court the following the initial hearing.
Mario Palacios (an ex-military member from Colombia) is suspected of being part of an armed mercenary team that targeted Moise last July.
According to a source, Palacios will make his first appearance at Miami’s federal court on Tuesday. The source spoke on condition of anonymity. Miami Herald first reported the arrest.
Two people who are familiar with this matter say that Palacios was taken into custody in Panama while being transferred from Jamaica to Colombia.
Haitian authorities arrested 45 persons in connection to the brazen murder that created an political vacuum in the Caribbean country. However, they have not indicted anyone.
Haitian Critics have expressed concern about the slow pace, intimidation, and witness tampering during Moise’s investigation.
