(Reuters) – The Omicron variant is 95.4% of coronavirus strains circulating within the United States at Jan. 1, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Since its discovery on Dec. 1st, the variant quickly spread throughout the country replacing Delta. This triggered a new wave infection that saw daily cases rise to the 1,000,000 mark Monday.

According to the CDC, the variant accounted in 77% of all cases during the week ending Dec. 25, a rise from its 58.6% estimate last week.

Although the fast-growing strain was discovered in Hong Kong, southern Africa, and Hong Kong in November 2011, it has been spreading rapidly across the globe. There are signs that this variant may be milder than other strains.

The CDC has reduced the number of Omicron-related cases it estimates to have been in the week that ended December 18 from 73% to 22%, citing more data and discrepancies due the variant’s rapid spreading.

According to CDC data, the Delta variant accounted for 4.6% U.S. COVID-19 case as of January 1, 2019.
