(Reuters] – Next week, the Dallas Fed will host a town meeting to get public feedback on its search to replace Robert Kaplan as President. Kaplan resigned last year after a row over personal securities trading.
On Tuesday morning, invitations were sent by email to the 13th virtual town hall, which was a first for Fed banks conducting presidential searches. Speakers included the Dallas Fed’s chairperson and deputy chair. Questions would be “directly answered” by the speakers, including those of Egon Zehnder and BakerRipley, as well as Egon Zehnder who is the CEO of Egonzehnder.
Eric Rosengren of Boston Fed President Kaplan both retired in early fall last year after it was revealed that Rosengren and Kaplan had been actively trading securities throughout the Pandemic Crisis 2020, when the Fed was undertaking massive economic and market rescue efforts.
Although they both denied that they violated any ethical guidelines, Jerome Powell, Fed Chair, was compelled to make stricter rules about personal trading. A probe by the inspector general into the trading continues.
Although the Boston Fed does not intend to host a town hall like this, it has also made an effort to make its searches more transparent than previous ones. The Fed published its report in 2012 after extensive public outreach. It also revised the job description last year to reflect community concerns and improve credibility.
Powell promised that the search will be broadening in order to create a wider group of Fed regional Fed Presidents. Rosengren and Kaplan both are white men. The remaining Fed presidents consist of five white men and three women, and two men from color.
