(Reuters) – Qualcomm (NASDAQ) Corp announced Tuesday deals to supply chips for automakers Volvo Group and Honda Motor Co Ltd. Renault SA (OTC) is accelerating its efforts to partner legacy automotive companies digitizing their product lines.
The company, which was once well-known for making mobile phone chips, has now created an array of automotive products, including self-driving cars and chips that can operate infotainment or digital dashboards. All chips have one goal: to help automakers convert their cars into rolling computers. Carmakers can also update them over-the-air with free upgrades, which generates revenue long after the car has been removed from dealer lots. This is a model that Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ) pioneered.
Qualcomm revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show Las Vegas it reached a contract with Polestar-backed brands Volvo (NASDAQ:) Inc and Polestar for use of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Chips and an Alphabet Operating System from Google in cars starting in late 2012.
The deal will allow Volvo’s electric SUV, which is to begin production this year, to tap into hands-free use of Google Assistant and navigation with Google Maps. According to both companies, future updates will be available over the air.
Qualcomm stated that Honda would use its “cockpit chips” in cars that hit the roads by 2023. Qualcomm stated that Renault (PA) had also agreed to its automotive technology. However, it did not specify which chips would be used or when they would arrive.
