(Reuters) – Qualcomm Inc (NASDAQ:) Inc stated Tuesday it is currently working with Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:) Custom chips to control lightweight AR glasses that can be used by consumers as well as businesses in metaverse applications.

Qualcomm Chief Executive Cristiano amon announced during a press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show, Las Vegas that both companies would work in conjunction to combine the custom chips and the software needed to make virtual worlds where people can play and work.

According to him, future collaboration devices will integrate with Microsoft software called Mesh. This allows users beam their realistic self into the headsets of other users so that they feel like they’re in one room.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Spaces software will be used to create the future hardware. It allows for basic functions such as mapping physical spaces in order to overlay digital objects on them, and tracking hand movements so users can interact with those objects using hand gestures.

Amon spoke from Las Vegas, where he was able to livestream his talk. “We’ve talked for years about wearable augmented reality gadgets that will gain scale.” Amon was one of only a few top tech executives to not withdraw from the trade show.

Both companies didn’t give any details on when chips or headsets might be made available.

“Our goal is to inspire and empower others to collectively work to develop the metaverse future – a future that is grounded in trust and innovation,” Rubén Caballero, corporate vice president for mixed reality at Microsoft, said in a statement.
