Taco Bell will launch a nationwide subscription program for tacos-a-day on Thursday in an effort to increase customer visits.
Customers with the Taco Lover’s Pass can order one taco — a crunchy taco, soft taco, spicy potato soft taco, Doritos Locos taco or the supreme version of any of those — each day for 30 days straight on the chain’s app.
The monthly cost for the pass is around $10, depending on which location you are in.
According to the latest quarter report, Yum BrandsWall Street was disappointed that the U.S. chain saw a decrease of 5% in same-store sales, despite its high expectations. Yum’s most successful restaurant is Taco Bell.
It has had a difficult time recovering late-night sales and breakfast sales during the pandemic. However, it launched breakfast again in August. Customers will be more likely to visit the subscription site, which might encourage them to purchase additional products with their subscription.
Taco Bell tested the subscription program in Tucson, Arizona in SeptemberThey were met with mixed success. Taco Bell reports that 20% of those who purchased the Pass were brand new customers to its rewards program. A further 20% of customers renewed their passes for the second time.
Similar subscription programs have been launched by other restaurant chains, but with mixed results.
Restaurant Brand International’s Burger King launched a coffee subscription in 2019 for $5 a month to help promote its breakfast menu but discontinued it several months later.
Panera Bread, which can be purchased privately, launched its own version in 2020 that offered unlimited coffee and tea for $8.99 a month, with three free months baked in. A little over a year later the program boasted nearly half a billion paying subscribers.
