(Reuters] – Oregon elections officials said that Nicholas Kristof, a columnist at the New York Times was not eligible to run for governor.

In order to be eligible for the governorship, candidates must have resided in Oregon for at least three consecutive years.

In a statement, Secretary Shemia Fagan stated that “As Oregon’s chief elections officer, it is mine responsibility to ensure all candidates on the state ballot are qualified to serve if they are elected.”

Kristof also stated that he will challenge the decision and would run for governor again.

“If Mr Kristof chooses to appeal, the Oregon Elections Division is committed to doing everything possible to allow  Oregon courts to decide  promptly,” Deborah Scroggin, Oregon elections director said.

Kristof, who announced his intention to run for governor in October 2013, said he wanted to fix the systemic social issues facing the state where Kristof grew up with his cherry farm and family’s sheep.

Kristof, aged 62 and from Yamhill in Oregon, stated that if elected, he would address homelessness, poverty and addiction to drugs.
