LAS VEGAS, Reuters – The first ever “colour-changing car” by BMW was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

BMW iX Flow is a concept car that uses electronic ink technology, which can be found in ereaders, to make the exterior of the car look different in white and gray.

Stella Clarke, a BMW researcher said that E Ink is a very energy-efficient way to change colour. So we used this thick material to make our 3D objects like the cars.

A phone app can stimulate the material to release different pigments, which causes it to change its color or take on racing stripes.

Clarke explained that in the future the controls for the change would also be operated by buttons on the car’s dashboard, or even hand gestures.

BMW claims that it takes no energy to keep the chosen colour, which is why BMW recommends this.

Clarke stated, “My favorite application is using colour to affect sunlight reflections.” You could change the color to reflect sunlight on a sunny, hot day, such as today. You could also change it to black to reflect heat on a colder day.

BMW claims that the vehicle at CES was limited to gray or white. However, they will expand the range of colours available to the customer.
