(Reuters) – The U.S. government signed Friday’s first contract involving 500,000,000 rapid COVID-19 test results. This was in addition to the promise made by President Joe Biden last December that they would be available at no cost for Americans who requested them.

Here’s how testing will be distributed in order to stop the rapid spread and expansion of Omicron coronavirus.

TEST IN HOMES IN “WEEKS”

White House COVID-19 coordinator Jeff Zients announced that on Tuesday, the U.S. Army closed the contracting process of the 500m tests. Zients assured that access to the other 500 million tests will continue as normal.

Zients indicated that tests will be delivered by manufacturers to the U.S. Government within the week. Americans can expect to begin to get free tests in the weeks to come.

WEBSITE FOR REQUESTING TESTS

Jen Psaki (Biden spokesperson) stated that in a December 23 briefing, the White House was finishing designs for its website. The site would go online when it is tested. Zients claimed this week that it would be “free” and simple.

The Washington Post reported that on Thursday, the White House had reached an agreement with the U.S. Postal Service will mail the test.

HOW MANY, HOW SOON?

Psaki indicated that the White House expects to receive its first set of test results by January 1.

In order to fulfill the contract with the government, the manufacturers will have to be able supply Omicron variant tests at a rate between January and March for those who are located in the United States. They can also provide antigen testing at 20 million monthly if not.

WHERE TESTS

These tests are from a 13-company list approved by U.S. Food and Drug Administration. They include Abbott Diagnostics Scarborough Inc., Quidel Corporation (NASDAQ:) Corporation, and ACON Laboratories Inc.
