Pixar’s next film will be Disney+.
This Friday DisneyThe company announced that its newest animated movie, “Turning Red”, will be avoided theaters in favor of streaming exclusively via their streaming service. Its debut was exclusive to the streaming site on March 11.
Family-friendly, this film will be about a girl growing up who turns into a red panda every time she is too excited. It follows the same paths as other Pixar movies “Luca”, and “Soul” during the Covid-19 pandemic.
It’s not too surprising that this is happening considering how families have been reluctant to return to cinemas even though vaccines are now widely available for children. Since March 2020 no animated film had ever made over $100 million.
So far, the top-earning earners have been Universal’sComscore data shows that “Sing 2” was released in December with a total of $97 million. “Encanto”, Disney’s Thanksgiving movie, has attracted around $92million in ticket sales.
Kareem Dan, Disney Entertainment Distribution chairman, stated that “Given the delay in box office recovery for films aimed at families, flexibility is still at the heart of our distribution decisions.” in a statement obtained by Variety.
CNBC did not receive a response from Disney reps immediately.
Somee Shi is the director of “Turning Red,” who also directed “Bao” for Pixar. It is the first Pixar movie to have been directed solely by a female director.
