(Reuters] – The December rebound in hedge funds saw them end a tough year on a high note, delivering broad-based annual gains of 10.3%. That’s the third highest performance since 2009 according to industry figures.
The HRF benchmark HFRI Fund Weighted Composite Index grew 1.28% by December after a dramatic 2% decline in November. Although the 10.3% annual gain was lower than 11.83% in 2011, it was still a significant improvement over previous years.
The HFRI equity hedge index rose by 11.96% last December, helped also by a 1.85% increase in December. The annual increase was less than the 17.89% gain in the previous year and even fell further below the 26.89% rise.
The biggest winners last year were cryptocurrencies. HFR stated that the Cryptocurrency Index of HFR soared 215%, which is even more than the 193% return in 2020.
HFR’s Macro Index grew 7.52%. This is its highest performance since 2010. It was largely due to a 23.57% increase in the Commodity Index.
Hedge fund data provider said also that hedge fund totals in 2021 reached $4 trillion, the highest level ever.
