WASHINGTON (Reuters), – U.S. Republican Senator John Thune declared on Saturday that he would seek reelection in 2022. This will increase the chances of his party retaining the South Dakota seat for the fall.
Thune was reportedly contemplating retirement following his service in 2005 as a senatorial Republican leader.
In a Twitter statement, he stated that “South Dakota needs a strong senator who is effective and can deliver what they want.” “I’m uniquely placed to accomplish that task, and I hope to earn the support from all South Dakotans during the U.S. elections in 2022. Senate.”
The Senate currently has 50 votes between Republicans and Democrats. Democrats are the majority party, as Kamala Harris (a Democrat) can cast tiebreaking votes.
