Disney gets patent for Metaverse Theme Park with VR, AR Effects
  • Disney holds the patent on real-time VR/AR simulations.
  • It will be able to bring digital assets as well as physical objects, and can project 3D effects onto all spaces within the park.
  • Disney believes that technology will clearly show a metaverse in the physical world.

A virtual world simulator patent was recently granted to Disney, a multinational entertainment company. The metaverse park will offer interactive experiences for visitors once it is launched. This patent technology will allow for headset-free Augmented Reality (AR) at Disney’s theme parks.

By tracking the visitors’ mobile phones, this technology would generate and project personalized 3D effects on nearby physical spaces, objects, and walls in the park. Patent technology was submitted to United States Patent and Trademark Office in July 2020.

The “metaverse” is a real-time rendered 3D Virtual Reality (VR) concept that largely exists on the internet. You can view its manifestation with AR headsets or VR glasses. Disney asserts that the patent it recently obtained would allow the realization of the metaverse idea to be brought into the real world.

Disney has previously shown interest in the metaverse when CEO Bob Chapek said that the firm is getting ready to blend digital and physical assets in the metaverse during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings meeting in November 2021. Chapek stated:

We’ll be able to connect the physical and digital worlds even more closely, allowing for storytelling, without boundaries in our own Disney metaverse.

Tilak Mandadi, Chief Strategy Officer at Disney Resorts, wrote in a LinkedIn post that he has envisioned strategies to blend the physical and digital worlds. Tilak Mandadi also stated that the future will transcend physical and digital barriers and allow for new forms of storytelling. He wrote further:

These are lasting experiences, with guest interaction both within and beyond the park. You will find them unique but they can also be shared and connected. You will always find something new.

Disney claimed that the simulator won’t be coming soon. Disney said that the simulator will not be arriving soon. However, it has just announced patent approval as one of its first steps in building its metaverse.

There are 12 Disney-approved theme parks worldwide at the moment. These are located in China and the US. In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic global lockdowns, Disney generated nearly $17 Billion in revenues with its parks and experiences as well as product segments over the past year.
