NEW YORK (Reuters), Monday’s New York City investigation focused on a potential “maintenance issue.” The door failed to shut when fire erupted at an apartment in Bronx the day before, killing 19 and nine children.
Eric Adams was just over a week in his job as New York City mayor. On Monday, Adams will share additional details about Sunday’s fire at Twin Parks North West, a 19-floor apartment building that provided affordable housing to low-income New Yorkers. The neighborhood was home to a large Gambian population.
Adams claimed that the smoke from the fire spread through the house because the door was left open earlier in the morning. To prevent flames spreading throughout a building, doors in apartments must be shut automatically.
Adams explained that Adams could have said there was a maintenance issue on the door. Adams confirmed this. This information will all be available during the investigation.
According to officials, around 60 victims were inflicted by the blaze. 32 others sustained life-threatening injuries.
Daniel Nigro (city’s fire commissioner) said that fire marshals discovered the cause of the fire in an apartment by looking at physical evidence and the accounts of residents.
He stated that heat was on in the apartment block and that the portable heater supplemented it.
It was possible that the disaster would raise concerns about safety in low-income urban housing. The second deadly residential fire this week in America was caused by flames that ravaged a Philadelphia public housing building. Twelve people were among them, and eight of those children.
The fire was extinguished by around 200 firefighters.
Adams stated Monday that many of the oxygen tanks of these men were empty. They pushed on through the smoke, instead of retreating and turning around.
A large number of residents of this building were Gambians.
Bronx Park Phase III Preservation LLC owns the building. This joint venture is composed of three entities: Belveron Partners (LIHC Investment Group), Camber Property Group (Camber Property Group) and Belveron Partners (Belveron Partners).
According to a spokesperson of the joint venture, the building was originally built as part of an affordable housing program in 1972. The spokesperson stated that all 120 units of the building are eligible for subsidy.
