(Reuters) – Mexico’s government said Monday that it will send a representative for the inauguration Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega’s fourth term. This was after indicating a day before it wouldn’t.

Ortega was elected in November after Nicaragua’s crackdown against the opposition. He is scheduled to be sworn-in for his next term starting Monday afternoon.

Mexico’s foreign minister initially announced on Sunday that it would send an official to the ceremony. However, it later stated it wouldn’t due to an annual meeting for diplomats.

On Monday, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador stated that it was imprudent to not send somebody, and Ramiro Ayala would attend, the charge d’affaires for Mexico in Nicaragua.

He stated, “Because it’s impossible to set aside our national self-determination policy and independence,” and argued that previous Mexican governments had been dependent on the interests “another government” through its diplomatic policies.

Lopez Obrador was asked what his opinion is of Ortega’s win in the election. He said that “the decisions are theirs”, before looking down briefly. He said, “The Nicaraguans’.”

In coordination with the European Union, on Monday, the United States placed sanctions against Nicaraguan officials including the Defense Minister.
