U.S. stocks were flat Monday evening following the declines of the major averages. However, the Nasdaq rebounded and ended a 4-day losing streak.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average futures fell 17 points or 0.05%. S&P 500 futures edged 0.01% lower, and Nasdaq 100 futures were slightly higher.

After a day of continuing declines following the sell-off the previous week, the Nasdaq closed slightly green in regular trading. This was due to a decrease in bond yields as well as concerns about Federal Reserve actions. The closing price was 0.05% lower, erasing 2.7% of the previous week’s decline. Meanwhile, the Dow lost 162 points, or 0.4%, while the S&P 500 slid 0.1%.

As bond yields rose, stocks remained in pressure. After ending at 1.5% in 2021, the U.S. Treasury 10-year yield was 1.8% on Monday.

Marko Kolanovic, JPMorgan, released Monday’s note stating that markets could withstand higher yields and omicrons. Investors should also buy the dips in tech stocks.

He said that the Fed minutes had caused a pullback in risk assets. “Policy tightening in the environment of strong cyclical recovery is expected to occur gradually and at a pace that risks assets are able to manage.

The Leuthold Group’s Jim Paulsen said that while the stock market is likely to encounter a correction this year – and last week’s action could perhaps have been the start of one – it will be met by strong company fundamentals.

Paulsen stated Monday evening that historically, the stock markets have suffered some severe ‘temper tantrums.’ Several rate hikes ultimately led to recessionary bear market,” he wrote in a note. However, investors’ current attention may not be right. “The stock market may respond less to rate increases and their timing than to real earnings direction.”

This week’s earnings season kicks off with big banks starting to report on Friday. Albertson’s will report its quarterly results shortly before the bell on Tuesday.

The week will be a major one for economic data and key inflation data. Jerome Powell, Federal Reserve chairman will face confirmation on Tuesday. Kansas City Fed President Esther George is also scheduled to speak about on economic policy, as is St. Louis Fed president James Bullard later in the day.
