REUTERS/Carlos Osorio/File Photo(Reuters) – Canadian wireless company Rogers Communications Inc announced Monday that Tony Staffieri, the interim CEO and president of Rogers Communications Inc was appointed as chief executive officer. This follows a long boardroom debate about who should be leading the company.
After Edward Rogers (the only son of Ted Rogers’ founder) attempted to remove Joe Natale from his position as CEO last September, claiming that he was unsure of Natale’s abilities to manage the acquisition of Shaw Communications (NYSE.) Inc for C$20 billion (15.81 billion) and to replace him by Staffieri.
Rogers was unable to get the support of the board, and Staffieri, then the chief financial officer, left the company. Rogers also attempted to expel Natale, putting him in conflict with his mother, and the two other sisters, both of whom are directors at the company.
Rogers was defeated in the power struggle, and he was removed from his position as chairman. He was reinstated however in November.
Staffieri was named interim CEO in November. He has over 30 years experience in telecoms, financial, and media sectors. Staffieri also served nine years as Rogers CFO. Prior to his appointment at Rogers, he also served in senior positions with BCE (NYSE 🙂 Inc.
