The Associated Press has announced the launch of a marketplace for non-fungible tokens (NFT), which was created by blockchain technology provider Xooa. Users will be able to purchase the news agency’s award-winning contemporary and historic photojournalism.

On Monday, January 31, the marketplace and first NFTs will be launched. This initial collection will include photographs by current and past AP photojournalists, as well as a selection digitally enhanced representations of their work. The NFT listing will include images from the Pulitzer Prize winning AP.

“For 175 years AP’s photographers have recorded the world’s biggest stories through gripping and poignant images that continue to resonate today,” said Dwayne Desaulniers, AP director of blockchain and data licensing. “With Xooa’s technology, we are proud to offer these tokenized pieces to a fast-growing global audience of photography NFT collectors.”

Original metadata will be included in each NFT, giving collectors information such as the location and time of capture, along with details on the equipment used. These NFTs include images of space, weather, war and others, along with spotlights about the work by specific AP photographers. The announcement states that the NFT prices will be different. Profits from the news cooperative are reinvested in funding AP journalism.

All levels of collectors will have the ability to trade, buy and sell official AP digital collectibles via the market. According to the statement, secondary market transactions will be supported as well as purchases made using crypto wallets such as MetaMask.
