Disney patents Disney tech to create a park with metaverse themes

Disney has received patent approval for a “virtual-world simulator,” a new tech that would see the multinational entertainment giant create personalized interactive attractions for its theme park customers.

Disney’s metaverse simulator will facilitate a headset-free augmented reality (AR). The simulator will track the location of mobile phones and project personalized 3D effects on nearby spaces and objects.

It is interesting to note that the original patent application was submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office July 2020. However, the approval for the “virtual-world simulator in a real-world venue” came on December 28, 2021.

The metaverse frenzy seems to be only beginning. However, Disney has been on the scene since the very beginning. Back in November 2021, Disney’s CEO Bob Chapek said during the firm’s fourth-quarter earnings call that they were preparing to combine physical and digital assets in the metaverse.

Our ability to more closely connect digital and physical worlds will enable us to tell stories without any boundaries within our Disney Metaverse.

Tilak Mandadi (Disney Resorts Chief Strategy Officer) revealed that he was keen to merge the digital and real worlds. This is a LinkedIn posting from November 2020.

As we look to the future, connected park experiences that transcend the physical and digital barrier and unlock new layers of storytelling are a very exciting focus of ours,” he wrote at the time […]They are timeless and guests can engage with them both inside and outside of the parks. You will find them unique but they can also be shared and connected. There is always more to learn.

As for its latest simulator patent, Disney told the LA Times that it had “no current plans” to roll out the feature in the near future.
