United cuts flights as about 3,000 workers call out sick from Covid

United AirlinesScott Kirby, CEO, told employees that the company is cutting its schedule due to an increased number of sick calls.

United employs about 3,000 people who are sick with Covid. This is approximately 4% of the workforce.

United extended last January triple pay to pilots for picking up flights through the majority of January. According to the pilots union, sick calls by aviators were at an all-time high. 

JetBlue Airways became the first to cancel its flights due to rising infection rates. This was then followed by Alaska Airlines. American Airlines stated it would follow the lead of other regional airlines and cut its schedule this week due to rising Covid rates.
