SYDNEY/HONG KONG/NEW YORK (Reuters) – Morgan Stanley According to people familiar with the matter, (NYSE:) will increase its annual bonus for top performers on Thursday by over 20%. This is in response to a boom in dealmaking that could lead banks to pay out huge sums this year.

Bankers in equity underwriting and M&A advisory businesses are expected to receive some of the highest increases at the Wall Street firm due to the strong performances of those divisions over the past year, said two of the sources.

Internationally, banks invest in adjusting their bonus pools based on business momentum. They can retain their talent in an extremely competitive environment by offering higher bonuses.

Morgan Stanley staff will receive their bonuses on Thursday. This kicks off the long-awaited and busy annual bonus season.

Morgan Stanley did not respond to our request for comment.
