Olympics-U.S. lawmakers ask IOC for assurances uniforms not made through forced labour -Breaking

(Reuters) – The United States’ Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) released a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday voicing concern over forced labour in the production of uniforms ahead of the Beijing Games.

Concerned by Anta Sports and Hengyuanxiang Group’s (HYX Group) contracts with the IOC to make uniforms, the CECC has concerns that they use cotton from the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. (XUAR).

The letter stated that “Cotton made in the XUAR” is synonymous with forced labour and systematic repression.

“Forced labor is an important factor in genocide that took place against Uyghurs as well as other predominantly Muslim ethnic groups within the region.”

A request to comment was not answered by the IOC immediately.

The U.S. government, along with many rights groups, claims that Beijing is committing genocide against Xinjiang. China has denied the accusations of human rights abuses.

“Because Anta’s and HYX Group keep using cotton made in the XUAR,” CECC wrote.

The IOC requested that the IOC make available a certificate of origin that HYX Group had provided to the IOC, which “reportedly confirmed no use of forced labor” as one of its requests.

CECC also requested that the IOC explain public “assurances” from Anta Sports, that their products are not made by forced labor.

Winter Olympics are from February 4-February 20.
