REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration(Reuters) – AstraZeneca, (NASDAQ:), announced Thursday that preliminary results from a Vaxzevria COVID-19 shot trial showed that it produced a stronger antibody response to the Omicron variant than other COVID-19 shots, such as Beta, Delta and Alpha, and Gamma when it was given as a third booster.
People who have been previously vaccinated either with Vaxzevria (or an mRNA vaccine) showed an increase in response, according to the drugmaker. It also said that the company would report this information to global regulators, as there is a pressing need for boosters.
AstraZeneca developed the vaccine in collaboration with Oxford University researchers. Last month, lab tests showed that three doses of Vaxzevria were effective against this rapidly-growing variant.
This data was the company’s first release from trials for boosters of the vaccine.
It said that it added to growing evidence in support of a third dose, regardless of primary vaccination schedule.
Andrew Pollard from the Oxford Vaccine Group stated that these important studies have shown that a third Vaxzevria shot after receiving two doses of the vaccine or after inactivated or mRNA vaccines can significantly increase immunity against COVID-19.
A significant British trial concluded in December that AstraZeneca’s shot raised antibodies after it was administered to boosters following initial vaccination. Pfizer (NYSE:) This is an mRNA-based company.
The study found that Pfizer’s mRNA vaccinations were effective in preventing mRNA from being transmitted to the brain. Moderna The biggest increase in antibodies was seen when the booster dose of (NASDAQ:) was administered.
