BUDAPEST, Reuters – Hungary is expecting a significant increase in COVID-19 patients over the next weeks because of Omicron’s rapid spread, Gergely Gulyas, the chief of staff to Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Thursday.

Gulyas indicated that new daily cases of cancer will probably reach all-time highs. However, Gulyas also stated that the government does not anticipate a similar rise in the death toll or hospitalisations.

The daily count of COVID-19-related infections in Hungary rose to 9,216 from 7,883 Wednesday. However, the hospital admissions declined.

There have been 40,164 deaths from COVID-19 in Hungary. There are now 2,647 COVID-19 patients at the hospital, with 249 being on ventilators.

Gulyas indicated that 75% were empty hospital beds and the 8,546 remaining beds could be extended if needed.

Gulyas said that “the government also decided to reduce the required quarantine to 7 days” from the original 10 days. She added that individuals can exit the quarantine at any time after five days if they have a negative COVID-19 testing.

Only six million out of Hungary’s 10,000,000 people received two or more shots. 3.3 million also had a booster. However, Hungary still has a lower vaccination rate than most other western European countries.
