LOS ANGELES (Reuters), – Alec Baldwin’s attorney said on Thursday that Baldwin would give his cell phone as part of a probe of the fatal shooting of a cinematographer while filming Western “Rust.” But police in New Mexico claimed they still have not received the handset.
Aaron Dyer, Baldwin’s lawyer said that the actor had made a deal to surrender the phone to New Mexico police after steps were taken for privacy protection in relation to unrelated matters to the “Rust”.
“Mr. Baldwin’s phone is being turned over this week for review,” Dyer said in a statement. “Mr. Baldwin continues to cooperate and support the authorities. Any suggestion that the opposite is true is just untrue,” Dyer said.
This comment came after the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office released a news release Thursday stating that Baldwin had not obeyed the search warrant demanding he handover the telephone and that a New Mexico prosecution was working closely with Baldwin’s lawyer.
According to the news release, “To this date, the phone has not been handed over to authorities.”
Santa Fe Detective leading “Rust” Investigation obtained the search warrant for December in order to review text messages, emails, and other information about Baldwin’s Apple iPhone (NASDAQ:).
According to the detective, she asked for the warrant because suspects, witnesses, and victims “often make or receive phone calls and/or message prior, during, and/or afterwards the commission(s) of crime(s).
Baldwin claimed that he had a revolver with him on set at the time of October’s rehearsal. He fired a live bullet and killed Halyna Hutchins, a cinematographer.
Baldwin claimed that he had never pulled the trigger, and denied being responsible for the shooting in an interview on television.
New Mexico’s prosecutor has indicated that some individuals who used guns to carry out Hutchins’ death may be facing criminal charges.
