As the White House seeks to alleviate nationwide shortages, orders will start accepting on Wednesday at the federal site. However, only four Covid-19 test will be available per household.

President Joe Biden, who was being criticized for his low inventories and lengthy lines to test for the program’s launch, announced last month that the U.S. would buy 500 million home tests in order to kick-start the program. The president then announced on Thursday that he will double the orders to 1 Billion tests.

Americans can’t count on a quick turnaround of orders. Instead, they should plan ahead to request testing well in advance to ensure they comply with federal guidelines.

According to the White House, “tests are typically shipped within 7-12 business days after ordering through the U.S.” The Postal Service reports shipping times between 1-3 days and first-class parcel service within the continental United States.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you test your home for symptoms of Covid-19, such as pain, fever and other signs, within 5 days following a possible exposure.

According to Dr. Rochelle Walensky (CDC director), “Certainly if it’s going to gathering with family or where there are people who are immunocompromised/older or have poor protection from a vaccine that may be an opportunity to test.”

Officials stressed that Covid-19 testing can be obtained through many other avenues, not just via the federal website. Private insurance providers will have to pay for at-home rapid testing. This means that Americans can be reimbursed for any tests purchased at online pharmacies or retailers. This covers eight tests per month.

According to the White House, the limit of four website orders per residential address will be enforced and it will also apply to the initial tranche of 500,000,000 tests. According to estimates, the initial block of 500 million tests will cost $4 billion.

Officials said they are cognizant that any launch of a website carries some risks — and memories of the disastrous roll-out during the Obama administration of Healthcare.gov are still fresh — but said they believe they are well-positioned to handle expected demand for tests.
