(Reuters). The U.S. Supreme Court accepted Friday to hear the appeal of a former Christian high school football coach suspended because he refused to stop praying on-site after each game. A case like this could potentially expand religious rights for employees in public institutions.

Joseph Kennedy was an assistant coach for football in Bremerton. He appealed a lower court decision that dismissed his claim that his actions by the school district violated his First Amendment rights to free speech and religion.

San Francisco’s 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ruled last year against Kennedy. It ruled that Kennedy’s speeches and prayers were violative of the First Amendment’s prohibition on government establishment of religious beliefs.
