KINGSTON (Reuters] -Jamaican authorities detained a former Haitian senator, who was a major suspect in the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise in July.

Dennis Brooks of the Jamaica Constabulary Force told Reuters John Joel Joseph, a prominent Haitian politician, was detained by authorities Friday.

Brooks did not comment whether Brooks had been arrested in response to a U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations request. The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations is still investigating the crime. The location of Joseph’s arrest in Jamaica was also not known.

Moise, an assassin armed with assault rifles attacked his home in Port-au-Prince’s hills on July 7. This sparked a massive manhunt and investigation in several Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Leon Charles, then Chief of the National Police, stated that Joseph had been a major player in the plot just days after Moise’s murder. He claimed that Joseph supplied weapons and planned meetings and police were looking for him.

Haiti has taken dozens of suspects into custody in relation to the July killing that caused a political crisis in the Caribbean nation. However, it has not indicted anyone and complaints have been made about the delay and intimidation of officials.

U.S. authorities have charged the Colombian national with conspiring to murder or kidnap outside of the United States. This is the first formal charge in relation to the assassination attempt on Moise.
