Sega Registered NFT Mark: Ambiguity, Hypocrisy or?

Sega can’t stop thinking about NFTs. The big gaming corporation, which created Sonic the Hedgehog as well as many other successful series, such as Crazy Taxi, Ecco the Dolphin, OutRun, Comix Zone, and so on, registered “Sega NFT” trademark in Japan. Japan Patent Office published it together with a new logo for Sega’s NFT project.

Curiously enough, just a week ago, bosses of Sega claimed they are not going to proceed with NFTs if they’re considered as simple money-making by the community. However, the patent was granted in December 2013. Sega is protected from being sued by someone else for the trademark. This move isn’t hypocritical.

Sega was previously stopped by the community from implementing NFT collectibles in mass quantities. This idea is still interesting to the company.

It’s important to notice that Sega has interesting relations with its fan base. Sega lost its mass audience in 2000 when it discontinued the Sega Dreamcast console. However, it became a game publisher and developer, still keeping in touch with “true fans.” While the newest 3D Sonic games are receiving mixed reviews from the community, the company is used to listening to and supporting most dedicated fans. Sonic Mania was a 2D platformer that is retro-inspired and released by the company. It started out as a fan project.

It is likely that the company will continue this philosophy: to please its fans and to try new things. This seems like a sound and secure strategy.

Sega may be able to show that NFTs and blockchain can help games.
