Thousands of flights canceled in eastern U.S. as winter storm heads north -Breaking

(Reuters). Thousands of U.S. flight cancellations occurred Monday. More than 100,000 households and businesses were without power after a snowstorm rolled up the East Coast from New England to Canada. It could bring down more than a foot (30 cm), forecasters warned.

According to FlightAware’s tracking website, more than 2200 flights were delayed or canceled Monday. PowerOutageUs reported that 128,000 households and businesses were without electricity from Georgia to Maine.

There were over 3,000 cancellations in America on Sunday.

Marc Chenard of the National Weather Service, College Park Maryland, stated that another 8-12 inches (20-30 cm) could be dropped by the storm as it travels north towards Quebec and Ontario.

The weather service reported that Atlanta received its first snowfall in four years.

Officials from the Eastern United States advised motorists not to drive on snowy roads Monday due to the U.S. holiday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights icon.

According to media reports, in North Carolina where there were record snowfalls, 2 people lost control of their cars at Raleigh on Sunday.

Toronto was Canada’s biggest city and traffic in other Ontario cities were jammed as snowstorms dumped several feet of snow, making visibility near zero.

Environment Canada reports that an extreme weather alert is in place for most of southeastern Canada. Toronto will receive up to 2 feet (60 cm), of snow.

Toronto Pearson airport is Canada’s busiest and canceled more than one third of Canadian flights. Others waited in their cars for the roads to clear. Passing pedestrians helped push vehicles up the street on a major commuter route through central Toronto. It appeared that it had not been ploughed.

Chenard declared that the storm was far from over. There are winter storm warnings throughout New England and New York as well west Ohio and Pennsylvania. High wind warnings are in effect for coastal New England, from Massachusetts to Maine. Wind gusts of up to 65 mph and 104 km/h are possible.
