MEXICO CITY (Reuters] – U.S. Energy secretary Jennifer Granholm will be traveling to Mexico this week in talks. President Andres Manual Lopez Obrador indicated that the Mexican government could be reorganizing the electricity market.

Lopez Obrador, who aims to consolidate state control on the power markets at the expense and private firms has raised concerns from the United States.

Lopez Obrador stated that no topic was off the table and suggested possible discussions on his proposals for changes to the power sector during Granholm’s visit. Granholm and the Mexican energy and foreign ministers will also meet Lopez Obrador.

Leftist Nationalist Leader said that he was happy to inform the leader about reforms, or give his opinion if requested.

Mexico’s Congress is expected to debate the proposal in the coming weeks. Private investors have been alarmed, while U.S. ambassador said Washington has serious concerns about it.

Lopez Obrador asserts that Mexico’s previous governments had rigged its energy sector for private capital in order to benefit consumers and Mexico’s state-run oil companies.

Mexican President stated that Granholm was also to be thanked by him for his approval of American takeover Royal Dutch Shell’s Texas-based Deer Park refinery, which is owned by the US state oil company Petroleos Mexicanos Pemex.
