(Reuters] Lusia Lucy Harris, the legendary basketball star who won a gold medal at 1976 Olympic Games has passed away at the age of 66. Her family announced Tuesday.

It was not possible to determine the cause of death.

The family released a statement saying that Lusia Harris, their angel, matriarch and sister, as well as grandmother, Olympic gold medalist, “The Queen of Basketball”, has died unexpectedly in Mississippi.

She’ll be remembered as a champion of charity and for the achievements she made on and off the basketball court.

Harris was the 10th child of eleven children. She was an outstanding high school athlete before she attended Delta State. There, she was awarded three consecutive national championships as well as a three-time MVP. Harris graduated college with a record of 109-6.

In 1975, she led the U.S. team to a Pan American Games gold medal and then a silver at the Montreal Games the following year. This was the first Olympics with a women’s basketball tourney.

The NBA’s New Orleans Jazz drafted her in 1977. She never played for the team and instead chose to raise a family. Inducted into both the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, she was born in 1992.

The Queen of Basketball, a documentary that celebrated her life and achievements last year was highly regarded.

In June, she shared her surprise when she received the phone call from them confirming that they would be making a documentary.

“That is just unbelievable.”
