LONDON, (Reuters) – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson sought to bolster his premiership following a rebellion by his own legislators who were angry about a series lockdown parties at Downing Street.

Johnson was elected to the highest job in his party to get Brexit done in 2019. However, Johnson is now facing calls for resignation after revelations regarding gatherings at Downing Street during COVID lockdowns.

Johnson repeatedly apologized for attending the gatherings and claimed that he did not know of many of them. However, he stated that he was at what he believed to be a work function on May 20, 2020.

54 Conservative MPs must send letters of confidence to their party’s chairman, the 1922 Committee. This will trigger a leadership contest.

According to the Telegraph, up to 20 Conservative legislators who were elected at the 2019 general election plan on writing letters of confidence to Johnson.

BBC Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg stated that a group of 2019 MPs will submit letters in an effort to reach threshold 54 for triggering a contest. They might reach 54.

The Times newspaper conducted an analysis and found that 58 Conservative legislators had written harsh words about the prime minister.

These letters are kept confidential so only the chairman knows the number of lawmakers who have written them.

Johnson will speak to parliament Wednesday, after his Cabinet approves plans to remove restrictions that were imposed in England to stop the spread COVID-19.

As the Omicron strain was rapidly spreading across Britain, the government introduced “Plan B” measures last month. The measures included instructions to work remotely, masks indoors, and mass vaccinations.
