PARIS (Reuters). -Twitter must reveal details about how it tackles hate speech online, Paris’s appeals court ruled on Thursday. According to a judicial source, this is a victory for advocacy groups who claim that the social media network doesn’t do enough to crack down on hateful content.

A lower court had ruled that Twitter (NYSE) must provide information about the nationality and spoken languages of those it uses to moderate French content. The verdict was upheld.

Twitter is also required to make public any administrative, contractual and technical documents which could help it determine its financial and human resources to combat hate speech online.

Some tech companies have been accused in the past of not doing enough to combat online abuse.

Britain declared last May that it would amend its social media laws to fine companies up to 10% of their turnover, or 18 million pounds (£25 million), if they fail to eradicate online hate crime and racist abuses. Meanwhile, senior executives could be subject to criminal charges.
