U.S. Representative Liz Cheney (R.W.Y.) testifies before House Rules Committee regarding the January 6th Select Committee recommendations that Mark Meadows be held in criminal contempt by Congress at Washington’s U.S. Capitol Building in Washington(Reuters) – U.S. Senate Mitt Romney is a prominent Republican critic of President Donald Trump. He will raise funds for Rep. Liz Cheney who, after voting to impeach Trump’s election and challenging his stolen-election claims, is trying for political survival.
A March 14th fundraiser for Cheney will feature Romney at Bobbie Kilberg’s house. Bobbie Kilberg is a Virginia Republican with a high profile who fought against Trump’s 2016 campaign for the White House. According to an invitation seen at Reuters.
A variety of Republican establishment figures, as well Trump critics, are among the attendees, including ex-congressionwoman Barbara Comstock and former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. Charlie Black is a lobbyist and Dick Cheney was formerly Vice President.
This event occurs as Cheney prepares for the tough primary fight for Wyoming’s one congressional district against Harriet Hageman (backed by Trump). The former president is seen in this race as an proxy for his grip on the Republican Party.
After voting to impeach Trump in January on the charge that he caused an insurrection at America’s Capitol Jan. 6th, Cheney was sidelined and the victim of Trump’s anger. He also led an ongoing congressional investigation into the attack. Republicans voted last year to remove Cheney’s leadership role in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Cheney, who ended September with $3.6 million in savings, is not in serious financial trouble. Cheney faces difficulties in Wyoming because her activist party is pushing against her. Cheney received six votes during a straw vote conducted by Wyoming Republican State Central Committee. Hageman got 59.
Politico reports that Donald Trump Jr. and billionaire Peter Thiel were set to co-host two fundraisers for Hageman last Wednesday. Hageman was estimated to have $245,000 left in the bank by September.
