(NYSE) stated Wednesday it would employ more than 8,000 additional technical employees this year. This is as the U.S. automaker continues to develop electric vehicles and other software-driven service.
According to the company, it plans on expanding its teams in order to electrify vehicles and develop autonomous and vehicle software as well as engineer fuel cells.
GM’s announcement came just a day following the unveiling of a $7 billion investment program in Michigan. The plan is primarily directed at producing full-sized electric pickups. This intensifies the competition with Ford Motor (NYSE) Co in North America for EV supremacy.
This automaker was dethroned in the United States by a Japanese competitor. Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE:) Corp. plans to increase its North American EV production to over a million units in the latter part of 2025.
This will be in direct competition with Tesla, the current EV market leader (NASDAQ:). Tesla will open a second U.S. factory in Austin Texas in the near future and plans to sell 1 million more electric vehicles worldwide in 2022.
GM also plans to increase its digital commerce presence by launching CarBravo, an online marketplace for used vehicles.
