ZURICH (Reuters) – Credit Suisse (SIX:)’s board of directors is convinced Chief Executive Thomas Gottstein is the right person to strategically realign the bank by curbing risk appetite, the Swiss bank’s chairman said in a newspaper interview published on Sunday.

Antonio Horta Osorio, the Swiss bank’s chairman was asked if he planned to take over as the CEO of the bank or replace Gottstein.

“I cannot confirm with absolute certainty that Thomas Gottstein enjoys the complete confidence of our board of directors,” Horta-Osorio said.

His leadership qualities were impressively displayed during the most difficult time the bank has been through. He’s the best man to lead the bank’s strategic realignment.

Horta Osorio was appointed chairman of the bank in April. He stated that the bank needed to reduce risk appetite, set appropriate incentives and hire and support staff who share its values.

“(The strategy discussions) are not over so we can’t talk about them publicly,” he stated.

Gottstein was also present during the interview and said that it was crucial for the CEO and chairman to collaborate closely in this critical period.

Credit Suisse has been trying to rebuild its image after it suffered huge losses with the supply chain finance funds tied to Greensill, and the collapsed investment fund Archegos.

Gottstein claimed that the bank has thoroughly reviewed its balance sheet. “We didn’t find any cases similar to Greensill, Archegos.”
