WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – President Joe Biden claimed that 14.5 million Americans had signed up for insurance coverage since November 1. He attributed the increase to his Pandemic Relief Package and the reopening of the online marketplace.
Biden stated in a statement that the data included more than 10,000,000 people who signed up through HealthCare.gov, a U.S. government website. According to Biden, the number was the largest ever generated during open enrollment.
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one-seventh of Americans were covered in the period between September 2020 and September 2021. Lower income Americans are the most likely to be insured.
Biden claimed that this did not happen naturally. Biden stated that his $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan was more effective in lowering costs and expanding access to health care for Americans than any other action taken since passage of Obamacare, or the Affordable Care Act.
Biden also said the opportunity to enroll for health insurance has been extended through Jan. 31 for Americans living in California, Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Washington, DC — places with their own health insurance marketplaces.
