(Reuters) – The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline could be stopped if Russia invades Ukraine, EU Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen indicated on Thursday. She was referring to the pipeline that transports gas from Russia to Germany.
In an interview with CNN late Thursday night, von der Leyen stated that “nothing is off the tables, everything is at the table,” in response to a question about whether Nord Stream 2 could be halted if Russia invades Ukraine.
A crisis caused by Russia’s massing of some 100,000 soldiers near Ukraine’s border is still being managed diplomatically.
Von der Leyen explained that “the (European) Commission” is charged with designing, shaping, and developing sanctions (on Russia) both in the technological field as well as in the financial sector.
She noted that the EU is Russia’s largest trading partner, accounting for 40% of Russia’s trade in goods. The EU also happens to be Russia’s biggest foreign investor, with 75% of Russia’s foreign direct investments coming from it.
Von der Leyen stated that these figures show that Russia has a powerful leverage, and it would be extremely painful for Russia to increase aggression against Ukraine. She also said that she worked closely with Joe Biden, the U.S. president, on an energy security strategic partnership.
Von der Leyen was asked if Russia would be able to withdraw from SWIFT’s global payment system in the event of an attack on Ukraine. She replied that it wasn’t off the table. However, she refused to discuss any details about a EU sanction package.
